Information for all Humboldt Fastpitch and Mist Players on College Applications and Financial Aid

Please note valuable information on applying for colleges and financial aid:

For college bound high school students, fall of senior year is very busy.  This fall this is especially true because the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) filing date opens on October 1st, instead of January 1st as has been the case for many years.  The good news is that with support from the Decade of Difference, Northcoast Cal-SOAP, and the Arcata and McKinleyville Career & College Centers, students and parents can get the help and information that you need to navigate the college application and financial aid process.  The Northern Humboldt Union High School District Career Frontiers program will start this school year with several events tailored to support students who plan to apply to go to college next fall. 

On September 15th, before McKinleyville High School Back to School Night, we will offer a college information session for students and parents at 5:30 p.m. in the MHS library. September 19th offers another college information session for students and parents at St. Bernard's Academy at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium. September 22nd is the 32nd annual Northcoast Cal-SOAP College Expo, starting at 5:30 p.m. at Eureka High School. On September 26th at 6:30 p.m. in the Arcata High School library, the Career & College Center will share college application tips and will answer questions about financial aid. October 5thfrom 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. at MHS, and October 13th from 2:00 - 7:00 p.m. at AHS, offers Cash For College sessions, which will help you with the specifics of filing your FAFASA.  For more information about any of these events, call the Northern Humboldt Union High School District or email Jim Ritter at jritter@nohum.k12.ca.us

FALL BALL INVITE

Labor Day weekend traditionally concludes our "summer" travel softball season and opens our "fall ball" travel season. ALL players interested in FALL TRAVEL SOFTBALL are invited to join our fall ball "kick-off" practice this Sunday, September 11th, 3 - 5 p.m. at Washington Elementary. Check in will start at 2:30 p.m AND IS OPEN TO ALL interested fastpitch players!

HSU Strength and Conditioning Camp

Humboldt State University offers a summer Strength and Conditioning Camp that we highly recommend for various reasons!  They include:

1)  Hit harder and farther!

2)  Pitch faster!

3)  Move more quickly!

4)  Preparation for college athletics

5)  It's fun!

The Nuts and Bolts of the Program:

This camp, open to all high school student-athletes, includes access to the strength and fitness facility from June 26th thru August 5th under the direction and teaching of the HSU strength and conditioning staff.

Times:

• There are two training sessions available each day (Noon-2pm) and (5:30-7:30pm) Monday – Thursday. and seminars are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 4 p.m.

Dates:

• The program runs from June 26th thru August 4th.

Cost:

• $100

Finale Tournament Schedules Released!

Just as fast as the 2016 Humboldt Fastpitch softball season has started, it seems it comes
to a close with the FINALE SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT, which will include over forty teams from throughout the county this year!

As we close out our 2016 season, please remember that spectator sportsmanship is critically important in serving as a role model to our youth.  Even though we invite elevated levels of competition with tournament play, keep in mind that it is just a game...  this is a youth recreation program!  Lessons of good sportsmanship, new friendships, value of teamwork and exercising respect for umpires far outweigh wins and losses in the development of our players. 

Also please realize that a lack of umpires has posed a serious challenge to the continued well being of this program.  Like the organization's players, the skills of our umpires are also being developed.  As such, please be supportive of our umpires.  Thank them for what they do...  it will go a long way in helping to retain their services for future years.  We also urge interested individuals to consider being an umpire in future years.  Please email the organization if you are interested.             

 Thank you for your participation with Humboldt Fastpitch.  Upon conclusion of your daughter's tournament play, coaches have been requested to collect all Humboldt Fastpitch uniforms and equipment and check it in at designated equipment check in stations at each respective field.  Please have on hand an extra t-shirt for your player so that uniforms may be collected immediately for prompt return back to the organization. Yes, we want them even if they are dirty!  If you still happen to have a jersey (old or new) from previous years, it would be much appreciated if it was returned at the Finale Tournament.  Good luck to all teams!

Travel Ball Invite

You Spoke... We Listened!

On our Facebook page, there was a request for Pitching Clinics!  We have rallied a number of our local high school and travel softball players to come work out with us and deliver not only Pitching but also Catching Clinic Sessions Too!  Hosted and supervised by Mad River MIST Travel Ball Coaches!  

Here is what we have to offer:

Dates:

• May 15th
• May 22nd
• June 5th

Times:

• 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
• Beginning Pitchers and Catchers (0-2 Years Experience)
• 11:30 a.m to 12:30 p.m.
• Intermediate Pitchers and Catchers (2+ Years Experience)

Please arrive 15-20 minutes early to check in and get warmed up.

Regular Season Schedule Update (ver 11)

Below is a link to an updated schedule for Humboldt Fastpitch regular season games - Version 11.  Note that rain outs MAY be made up at the discretion of the coach and with pre-approval of the regional representative and based on field and umpire availability. 

We hope that you enjoyed your participation this in the Opening Tournament for Humboldt Fastpitch this past weekend.  The Board, Regional Reps, and Organization Officers want to express their congratulations to the all of the participating teams...  to the players, coaches, and supporting families!  We also want to express our appreciation for the support and coordination provided by our Umpire in Charge and to the many umpires that helped pull off this busy weekend of tournament play.

Attn 12u Players, Parents and Coaches!

We received some crazy news this evening...Newburg Field #2 is NOT playable per City of Fortuna Parks and Recreation Office due to the field being saturated from recent rains.  As a result, all Newburg Field #2 games scheduled for Sat the 30th will be played at Fortuna High School.  No game times are impacted...it is simply a location change.  We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause but at the same time so thankful for the people who made Fortuna High School  happen so that we could still play! 

Opening Tourney - Fri 4/29 thru Sun 5/1

The Opening Tournament Pool Play and Bracketing is ready for dissemination as are the League and Tournament Rules.  We are pleased to share that Redwood Fastpitch will be joining us again for the tournament this year.  There are many teams, fields and details that we manage when running tournaments of this magnitude.  The #1 thing we need to stress is that our kids are doing what they love...  so please provide positivity, enthusiasm, support, and courtesy for all players, coaches, umpires, and tournament staff irrespective of the outcome of the game. Teaching good sportsmanship to the youth in our community is our top priority!   Thank you!

Spirit Wear

For those of you who pre-ordered either Humboldt Fastpitch Sweatshirts or Tournament Shirts they will be available Saturday and Sunday for pick up at your tournament site.  Payment is due upon pick up.  Limited sizes and quantities will also be available for sale to those who didn't get a chance to order.

Rescheduling Rainouts

Friday was a day filled with Good News and Bad News! 
Sat Games Rained Out

The Good News:  All games rained out will be rescheduled.

The Bad News:  Both the City of Fortuna and the City of McKinleyville cancelled us off the fields for Sat 4/23.  ALL SAT GAMES RAINED OUT!  Here is why:​

The Good News:  Every team will be getting new equipment bags!  Thank you Niles Family for hooking us up through our local Sports Authority!​

Opportunity!!!  We just don't have enough funds yet to outfit ALL teams the way we want to!  As a result, you should be hearing about a hit-a-thon soon if you have not already!  Please help us "up our game" by seeking sponsors/donations so that we can provide newer and better equipment and access to more tools to train these girls!  :)

2016 Softball Season Update

Hi All--

We can't be more excited for this 2016 Softball Season!  Here are a few reasons why!

1. We hit 400 student athletes participating in the program this year!  
2. We have expanded in the 8u age groups in the Hoopa and South Fork regions!
3. We have purchased a new uniform name!  The Tsunami will be making its debut this year!
4. The 2016 Master Softball Schedule is in process and will be released as soon as it is finished! Expect games to start the weekend of April 23rd-24th.  Opening Tourney is scheduled for April 30th, 31st, and May 1st and will be located in South County.
5. We have an incredible group of volunteer staff in all areas of the county helping to facilitate the work to be done!  This organization could not function without them and if you get a chance, please thank any one of them!

2016 Softball Season Update

Thank you to all who attended assessments!  It is very helpful to the daunting task of attempting to distribute player skill evenly among teams, while factoring in region, age, and logistic needs - all that for a combined registration of 391 girls for the 2016 season!  Thank you to all who assisted in running the assessments, including the Mad River Girls Fastpitch Softball Association's 16U Travel Team, the Mad River MIST, who greeted and escorted players through the assessment stations.  

PROGRAM UPDATES

Team Distributions:  We are scheduled to finalize team distributions on Thursday night, March 24th.  

• Coaches Meeting:  Tentatively scheduled for next week.

• Practices:  Many of our local Parks and Recs have told us fields will not open until at least April 1st.  Coaches may need to be creative with practice plans depending on when the fields actually do open.  The moisture has really put a damper on the field maintenance activities they have been able to do in years past.  As soon as fields open, we'll get those girls out there!

• Communication:  We do as much as possible electronically!  If you know someone who is not getting the email updates, please have them email humboldtfastpitch@gmail.com!  We are happy to add them to the list!  Also, we have not been able to finish merging last year's email list with this year's and as a result some of you may be getting multiple emails of the same thing!  Thank you for your patience as we work to get the season started.  We are looking to clean that up by the end of next week also!

• Social Media:  We post on Facebook any email communications that we send plus more!  Please join us:

We also love positive and fun community interaction!  Please feel free to positively post and/or comment!  We love to hear from you!

• Game Schedule:  Once teams are finalized, we will attempt to get the schedule out as soon as possible.  Look for games to "soft start" mid-late April with the first tournament being April 29th, 30th, May 1st.  We are hoping the weather doesn't crash our best laid plans but that uncertainty is all part of the sport!

• Pictures:  Team and individual pictures will be available again this year.  This year pictures will be provided by Parky's Pics:

A photo schedule will be distributed at a later date.

• Spirit Wear:  Will be largely on a pre-order basis.  Pre-orders will be collected electronically and available for pick up at snack bars during tournament play.  The 2016 Humboldt Fastpitch Softball Sweatshirt (see attached pic below):
